An Internet domain is the address given to the browser to access a page in cyberspace. These must be registered and registration fees must be paid periodically so that surfers can access the pages, such as www.enter.co, for example.
Domains ending in .co are very popular and, although they should mean that the page you are visiting belongs to someone in Colombia or something related to this country, there are also many foreign companies and people who use it because .co can mean company. The domains, no matter what they end in, can be used from anywhere in the world.
The .co is patrimony of the country, and this because of a column I wrote on the subject, in which I questioned why the private company that managed it was going to sell it and if this domain was not a public good. Then, the Minister of Communications of that time asked the Council of State if it was property of the country, and they answered yes, and the management became the property of the nation.
Now, due to a bidding process that took place almost 10 years ago, it has been managed by a company called .co and thanks to its management, this domain has grown exponentially. There are 2.2 million .co domains in 190 countries, it is the 20th most popular among 1,500 options, since 2010 it has grown 10 times its penetration, it is the second most used domain in Latin America and there are approximately 300,000 in Colombia alone.
These figures are excellent and ratify the good management of the concession that the company .co has made for the expansion of this domain, which represented and will represent good income to the State. These are variables that must be taken into account when the time comes to auction the administration of this domain again. In this case, I believe that we should continue on the good path we have been following, which is the best.
